Week 2 - Wikis
Mar 19 2008, 10:56 AM EDT
I created a private book club wiki for my circle of friends. Every three months we select a book, read and then discuss. Since we all live in various parts of the country and as far as the Bahamas, setting up this wiki is a brilliant idea. We can now share our thoughts, make suggestions and catch up with each other.

Nice idea. I was thinking about a family based Wiki. My brothers are scattered around the Northeast with me out here in the Midwest. As we plan our vacation this year, it is getting difficult to connect with each other. We could post thoughts and ideas onto the Wiki for feedback and discussion. And since we can add links, we could share potential travel destinations or accomodations, etc.We could categorize it by regions or times of the year (winter vs. summer destinations) - all sorts of possibilities. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. 2. Great wiki ideas - book club, vacation planning
Mar 19 2008, 12:37 PM EDT
Those are both really awesome ideas. Now you've got me thinking! I hope more people will read this thread and come up with creative ideas of their own. I stuck with a public "hobby" wiki, called Northeast Ohio Gardening: http://ohiogarden.wetpaint.com/ . But I think you two came up with much more original and useful ideas for private wikis. I hope that the book club wiki is a great success, and that the family vacation wiki works out! Do you find this valuable? |

3. Blog link

I forgot to add a link to my blog (Step 4 of this week's assignment) - it's called "Kiwano Librarian" at http://kiwanolibrarian.blogspot.com/ . The library is fictional.

At the moment at least, both my Wiki and Blog are just about/for the course. I want to get much more comfortable using the technology before expanding them, either for work or for play. By the way, I'm attempting to participate in this course at home - with dial-up computer access! So it's very slow going. (That's the cheap husband tag). These are the links for my wiki and blog: Pam's Blog and Wiki (just starting) Link to Blog: http://pvanhine.wordpress.com/2008/03/13/hello-world/#comment-5 Link to Wiki: http://pammlaweb20wiki.wetpaint.com/ Nothing exciting yet - just found out today that what I thought I had done in the blog last week wasn't there! Guess I forgot to push a final button. Do you find this valuable? |

I've just created my first ever Wiki (and blog in Week 1) and both are very, very basic. I'd like to use the Wiki eventually as a place to post our library internal staff policies and procedures, so I hope to improve it as we go along. For personal use, I want to create a Family Album type Wiki but I'm going to focus on library issues for this course so I can start something that I can actually implement.Link to my Wiki - "SciLib Staff Policies" - http://scilib.wetpaint.com Link to my Blog - "Arcade" - http://dj-arcade.blogspot.com The book club and vacation wiki ideas are great and I could see them in my life as well. I thought about starting a wiki for my family to contribute family geneology information. I created a notebook of census records and family trees for my siblings last year. A Wiki might be a better way to organize and invite family members to contribute their knowledge. A Wiki would be an easy way for us to build a "database" of our family geneology and share it amongst ourselves.

8. RE: Week 2 - Wikis

Foodies united!! At our offices we have a monthly pot luck that is open to anyone who is interested in cooking, baking, or eating. A long time ago the group that ate lunch together identified themselves at the Village, with medieval overtones. As an example, I am the Village scribe since I am a librarian. Yes, we also have a self-appointed Village idot and a Village wench. It is great fun around the lunch table. So I created the wiki to be a common point to discuss each month's pot luck theme. In February the theme was red food, since pot luck was the day before Valentine's Day. You may be thinking that March was green food, but it was actually Irish food since some green foods did not seem appealing. http://villagepotluck.wetpaint.com/ 1 out of 1 found this valuable. I assume you also celebrated Pi Day on March 14? In a DOE science department, they bring pot luck pies (pizza pies, apple pies, any kind of pies). It's quite popular.

We did have pie for dessert! The pot luck started out on a whim, but now folks really look forward to a monthly get together.
