The following information should be gained during the reference interview:

1. clear definition of the question
2. motivation and objectives of the user
3. what the user already knows about the subject; his ability to suggest synonyms or other terms for the subject he is seeking information on
4. what the user needs to know about the subject; how to narrow the question if a great deal of information is available; how to broaden the scope if little information is available
5. sources already consulted by the user, if any
6. amount and level of material needed
7. when the information is needed
8. time period to be covered
9. languages acceptable to the user
10. form in which the answer is expected
11. status of the user
